2025 Broad Street Run Training: Week 1

It's officially Broad Street Season and week 1 of 10 weeks counting down to our favorite 10 miler: the 2025 Broad Street Run! Whether you’re a first-time racer or legacy runner, the first week of training sets the foundation for a strong and successful race day. We put together some tips for picking a training plan that fits your experience level, schedule, and goals.

    1. Consider Your Current Fitness Level. If you’re new to running or haven’t run 10 miles before, look for a beginner-friendly plan with a slow mileage buildup. If you’re training with a mileage base, look for a more advanced plan that includes race-pace workouts and speedwork.

    2. Look for a Plan with Gradual Mileage Increases. The plan should follow the 10% rule (increasing mileage by no more than 10% per week) to prevent injuries and should build up to at least 8-10 miles before race day.

    3. Choose a Plan That Fits Your Schedule. Consider how many days you can commit to running and pick a plan that works with your lifestyle, work, and personal commitments.

    4. Prioritize Race-Specific Workouts. If your goal is just to finish, a basic plan with long runs will work. If you’re chasing a time goal, look for a plan that has tempo runs, speed intervals, and race-pace training.

    5. Recovery & Tapering is part of training. A good plan should include rest days and easy recovery runs to prevent overtraining and injury. The last 1-2 weeks should taper your mileage to allow your legs to rest and recover before race day.
