Running in the Philadelphia area continues to grow and grow. From the races to beautiful trails and places to run to great groups, we consider ourselves very lucky to be surrounded by such a wonderful running community. Here's who we're running with this this week:
Hi, I'm Sarah G., a Cadette in Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania (GSEP) Troop 41050. I have been a Girl Scout for about 9 years ever since I joined in Kindergarten as a Daisy. One of the reasons I love Girl Scouts is because of all the fun things we get to do! I have tried many new things and have learned many new skills. I’ve learned about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) through Girl Engineering days at Villanova University, book binding at a nearby art studio, and knitting, thanks to our local senior center. We also do many community service activities like volunteering for a soup kitchen. Another thing we do is a lot of outdoor activities! We’ve gone hiking, river canoeing, and even went rock climbing up natural rock.
Another fun outdoor activity that my friends and I participate in is the Trefoil Fitness Challenge. This challenge contains three races; Thanks-A Lot-Trot, Tough Cookie Adventure Challenge, and Thin Mint Sprint.
The Thanks-A Lot-Trot is an annual 5K run/walk or a 1K run/walk. I did this race with my friend, Bella. It was so fun to be able to run around Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania’s Camp Laughing Waters since I go there for camp every summer! We got to go up hills and around bends. Although it was a little muddy, it was still fun to run that course since it was so well mapped. The course started at the gymnasium and went to the far campsites and all the way to the horse barn and back!
I also completed the Tough Cookie Adventure Challenge with my friends Cara and Bella this past fall. The Tough Cookie Adventure Challenge was a mix of biking and running. The goal was to find “lantern” markers hidden around camp and stamp them on your passport. We got to go on all the hiking trails and even some we don’t usually go on during camp. It was so much fun to find all the lanterns because some of them were in parts of camp we had never explored before.
Completing two out of the three races for the Trefoil Fitness Challenge has been a blast and I can’t wait to do the Thin Mint Sprint on Saturday, April 13. Once we complete the Thin Mint Sprint, we will be able to get the Trefoil Fitness Challenge patch! I am so excited; I can’t wait.
Join Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania on Saturday, April 13 at Fairmount Park just off Germantown Pike at 200 W. Northwestern Avenue for the Thin Mint Sprint. This 5K walk/run is open to all ages and skill levels. Come out for a fun-filled run along Forbidden Drive and make some new friends along the way! Girls or adults who register as NEW Girl Scout members the day of the race will save 50% on day-of race admittance and a voucher for a FREE new member pin.
