Who We're Running with: Black Men Run Philadelphia

Running in the Philadelphia area continues to grow and grow. From the races to beautiful trails and places to run to great groups, we consider ourselves very lucky to be surrounded by such a wonderful running community. Here's who we're running with this week!

By David Johnson

Black Men Run Inc was started in June of 2013 in Atlanta, GA by Jason Russell & Edward Walton with the goal of the organization being to encourage health and wellness among African American men by promoting a culture of running to stay fit. The organization now has 50 chapters across the country and the UK.

The Philadelphia chapter was started in September of 2013 and has continued to push the goal of the organization while developing and working to achieve the goals of our chapter. We like to think of our group as more than just another run group. We look to partner with and develop our own programs that serve the African American community here in Philadelphia as well as the tri-state. Whether we’re speaking with students at local schools, lending a helping hand at homeless shelters or raising funds for local nonprofits, we look to be active in some form or fashion within our communities. It feels good to stop and help in some of the neighborhoods in which we run.

Running is the thing that brings us all together and there’s no better place to do it than these Philly streets and trails ( I may be bias, just a little). We currently meet at 7PM on Monday & Wednesday evenings at Lloyd Hall as well as 6:30AM Saturday mornings at 33rd and Diamond. All are welcome to come out and run with the group, no one is excluded due to race, gender or ability. We have a motto of “No runner left behind” so if you start with the group, you will not finish alone.
