Wandering the Wissahickon

There's nothing like running through trails.

Working in Manayunk, I have such easy access to the Wissahickon trail system. It's practically right in my backyard and even though it's within the city limits of Philadelphia, it feels like I'm out in the middle of the forest, miles away from the hustle of the city. I've run through there hundreds of times and I'm still able to discover new trails and landmarks that make me want to keep coming back to explore more.

In the summer when it's 95 degrees and sunny, the Wiss is shaded and runs along the creek, so I'm much cooler than if I were out on the road. If I have the time to spend I'll go out on a Saturday morning and wander my way through the side trails. It gets pretty hilly and "technical," but a good pair of trail shoes can make all the difference in the world.

My current favorite trail shoe is the Nike Wildhorse (which we carry in our stores).

I'm well protected from the rocks, roots and it's super cushy and lightweight with amazing grip to keep me from slipping. Add some Clif Bloks to tide me over and a handheld water bottle for hydration and I'm good for hours on the trails!

Written by: Neil T., store manager of PR Manayunk. Neil first started running 6 years ago to try and get back in shape. After about 4 months of suffering on his own, he signed up for his first 5k, which would be the farthest he'd run to date. As painful as it was, he fell in love with the sport. In 2012 he signed up for his first marathon, having no idea what he was doing. Neil found the Team Philly training program and dedicated himself to it. Not only did Team Philly prepare him for that marathon but it also changed his life for the better in other ways. He made lifelong friends and it actually led him to a career working in run specialty! These days, Neil is either hitting the pavement of Kelly Drive or wandering the trails of the Wissahickon. If you happen to see him out there, say hi!
