If the past few weeks were an indicator of what to expect for the rest of the summer, it looks like we can expect warm temperatures (and maybe even another heat wave?) to stick around for the foreseeable future. Although warmer temperatures and humidity can make summer running feel uncomfortable, there are plenty of ways to make your experience more enjoyable - including choosing the right gear.

One of the most popular items in our shops that can help improve your summer running experience are men’s and women’s running shorts. I know what you’re thinking, “how can something as simple as running shorts improve my run?” Glad you asked…

Running shorts, like running shoes, are all designed differently to help meet the needs of different types of runners (think height, body type and even running environment). When choosing a short for summer running, be sure to consider the following:

  • Inseam & Length: The inseam is the seam that runs from the crotch to the bottom of the short. This will give you a general idea of how much leg coverage you’ll get. The shorter the inseam, the less coverage you can expect.

  • Fabrics & Materials: Not all fabrics are created equally. A quality running short should be moisture wicking and durable. If you’re going to be working out indoors or running on the road, a light fabric would be ideal. For trail running, look for something that won’t rip if you fall or are snagged by a tree.

  • Liner: Running shorts will either come with a brief or long compression liner. Some shorts don’t have any liner at all. [P.S. If you go liner-less, you may want to invest in Body Glide to help prevent your legs from rubbing together]

  • Pockets: If you plan to carry your ID, money and keys, you’ll need at least one secure pocket. If you want to carry your phone, energy gels, or wallet, look for styles with multiple zip pockets.

Below, you’ll find a quick guide to the most popular men’s and women’s running shorts in our stores. Stop in to find our which ones are best for you.
