5 Reasons We're Excited For Summer

Sure summer doesn't officially start until June 21st but we all know Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial, official start to summer. To celebrate we put together a short list of 5 things we're looking forward to this summer:

Not the sunniest start to summer...

Not the sunniest start to summer...

1. Summer Challenge #runlocalphl

It's new and for you! We love summer time and summer running in Philadelphia. It's hot, it's sweaty, it's FUN - and it goes by way too fast. To make the most of the time between Memorial Day and Labor Day, we put together a summer challenge for you to win prizes every week.

Yeah - you read that right, we're giving out prizes EVERY WEEK this summer.

Check back here or follow our facebook page on Wednesday, May 31st for the challenge breakdown and rules. Here's a hint - if you aren't on strava and instagram, download now then join the Philadelphia Runner strava group and follow us on instagram @phillyrun.

2. Global Running Day

We don't know who created Global Running Day but we like where their head was at. Celebrate with us at our annual Run to Rita's! We'll go for a fun 3 mile run starting at our University City shop and end at Rita's on 22nd & South for water ice and raffle prizes. All you have to do is show up, run and we'll pick up the tab!

3. Nike ZoomFly & VaporFly 4%

ICYMI, on May 6th at the Monza Formula 1 racetrack in Milan, Italy, Eliud Kipchoge, Zersenay Tadese, and Lelisa Desisa attempted to do something that no one had ever done before: run a marathon under 2 hours (that's a 4:34 minute per mile pace for 26.2 miles).

Nike launched the ambitious Breaking2 project in 2014, the same year the current record of 2:02:57 was set at the Berlin Marathon by Kenyan Dennis Kimetto. Desisa, Tadese, and Kipchoge were chosen for the record attempt based on 3 key measurements - running economy, velocity and VO2.

After years of intense research, design and planning - Kipchoge crossed the finish line in 2 hours and 24 seconds.

On June 8th, inspired by the Breaking2 project, you can own a pair of shoes introduced by Nike as the new future of running. Designed to improve the efficiency of all runners (from elite marathoners to those training for their first 5K), the Nike Zoom Vaporfly 4%, Nike Zoom Fly and Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 34 will be in our shops and as Nike put it, this trio "redefines the look and feel of fast running."

4. West Philly Workout Series

We're excited to announce the return of our summer-long West Philly Workout Series alongside our pals at honeygrow. On the second Monday of each month through August, we'll feature a new guest trainer and a fun new workout location.

The workouts meet at our University City location (36th & Walnut Street) at 6:30PM. Each attendee will receive 15% off their purchase at our shop and 20% off at our their post-workout honeygrow meal. BYO water and a friend!

5. The Philly 10K

The Philly 10K is sold out but that doesn't mean you have to miss out on the fun this summer. Follow The Philly 10K on facebook, instagram and strava for pop-up runs , contests, volunteer opportunities, and more! Our free 10 weeks to 10K training program will officially start on June 19th but we're having a kick off run on June 12th starting in Center City at 6:30PM.
