Sock Talk

By Daryl Santiago

It's SOCKtober! Don’t start the month or your next run/walk/workout on the wrong foot. It’s time to update your sock selection by adding some of these great styles to your wardrobe!

Choosing socks can make or break your run/walk/workout. It may not seem like a big deal and you might be wondering if there really is a big difference between cotton socks and the high quality technical socks we stock our stores with. We put together a few reasons why you should toss out your cotton socks and replace them with the socks that we offer in our stores:

  • When cotton socks get wet they will stay wet and its not a pretty sight after you take off those socks! When wet socks contact the skin surface friction is created while you're running, walking or working out. Blisters are formed when the cotton material rubs against the skin. Blisters underneath parts of the foot and around toes are not fun and will effect your next run, walk, workout.

  • Cotton socks do not breathe well and will not pull the sweat or moisture off the skin. As a long time runner I learned the hard way of not to wear cotton socks. When I first started running I used to run in cotton socks and it was a bad idea especially on the hot and humid days! During hot and humid days I noticed blistering/hot spots underneath the my foot and wanted to stop running and rip off the socks.

  • Cotton socks don't last long! Running socks made with technical fabrics such as lycra, polyester, nylon, or iWick (Feetures sock fabric) hold up much longer over time. The socks are constructed with a tighter knit construction and also hug the foot to ensure that they stay in place on your foot and aren’t sliding down during activity.

  • Technical running socks are made with extra padding in specific areas which adds some extra protection especially for high impact activities.

Remember a good pair of running socks are as important as your running shoes. Avoid cotton and treat your feet to new technical socks every time you replace your shoes. Keep reading to see some of what we have in store then stop by any of our shops to check out our full selection of socks.

Feetures

What I like the most about Feetures socks is the targeted compression underneath the arch and the design prevents from the sock from rolling down. Other features of Feetures:

  • TARGETED COMPRESSION: Zone-specific compression where you need it most for superior comfort and support.

  • ANATOMICAL DESIGN: Conforms to left and right structure of the foot providing enhanced fit and reduced risk of blisters.

  • SEAMLESS TOE: Eliminates irritating seam that causes pressure points and sock bunching.

  • LIFETIME GUARANTEE

Our shops carry a selection of Feetures socks ranging from ultra light cushioning to max cushioning including Merino Wool socks.

Balega

Balega running socks are expertly designed and crafted from heel to toe for superior performance while you’re performing. Balega key features:

  • Contoured fit: Balega running socks fit snug and don't move on your foot. Movement causes irritation; irritation causes blisters.

  • Deep heel pocket: Balega knits up to 30% more stitches and adds more branches into the heel, ensuring your heel is fully protected and the lateral stretch from bridge to heel is optimal.

  • Seamless comfort: Seams cause friction; friction causes blisters. Balega toe seams are hand-linked for ultimate seam-free comfort.

  • Ventilation panels: Moisture is another cause of blisters. Strategically-placed ventilation panels aid the cooling and wicking process for a clean, dry fit, making all Balega running socks moisture wicking socks.

Balega’s Hidden Comfort sock is my go to for high cushion when feet are feeling a little sore after a long run or workout. This is also my go to sock if I'm walking around town or on my feet for a long period of time.
