I got into the Broad Street Run, now what?

This is the moment you’ve been waiting for. You received an email welcoming you to the Blue Cross Broad Street Run and things just got real.

If this is your first time running Broad Street, don’t panic. We’ve compiled a short list of everything you need to do before you jump in to training for the Broad Street Run. Each week, we’ll post a blog including everything you need to know about running a successful race.

Let’s dive in…

First things first. Get fitted for running shoes. Running 10 miles in a shoe that doesn’t work for you can end your Broad Street Run goals before you get to the starting line. Stop by one of our shops for a shoe fitting and gait analysis. With the guidance of our staff, there’s no need to pick out a shoe and hope it works — we’ll help you pick the shoe that meets your needs.

P.S. If you plan to stop by your local Philadelphia Runner and pick up a pair of new shoes in February, we’ll give you $15 toward your next purchase in March 2017.

Follow a training program to meet your goals and reduce injury. Doing “too much, too fast” is one of the main reasons new runners never make it across the finish line. We know you’re excited but we want to make sure your training runs and cross-training days don’t put too much strain on your body. Our training program, Team Philly Race Training, helps runners of all levels reach the finish line at the Broad Street Run. Learn more about the program here.

What about running gear? Running gear can make or break your training routine. Be sure to get a few pairs of running socks (yes, they’re different), moisture wicking gear and a good sports bra for ladies to help prevent blistering and chafing.

Should I worry about recovery? Absolutely. Since you’ll be running more miles, your body will definitely feel sore after some of your longer runs and tough workouts. Invest in a good foam roller or recovery stick and commit to using it for at least 10 minutes after your training runs to help prevent injury.

Have a friend who didn’t get in? No worries. Did you know that all members of Team Philly get to participate in the Broad Street Run? They’re kicking off training on February 25th, 2017 at our University City Store.

Let’s get this show on the road.
